Ewan McLean, the founder and Managing Director of MPH Group, has a rich history in the trades industry. He honed his skills as a plumber and gas engineer at Stiells, serving his apprenticeship in Scotland and working with high-profile clients such as banks, schools, and water treatment plants. He later worked in London, including on Fleet Street for Goldman Sachs. With a dream of starting his own company, Ewan opened McLean Plumbing and Heating and took his younger brother Paul on as an apprentice. This marked the beginning of a thriving, family-run all-trades company.
McLean Plumbing and Heating started small, but quickly gained traction as a top installer for B&Q, eventually expanding to kitchens and taking on more work.
During this time, MPH became the largest installer in Scotland, with 30 to 40 bathroom and kitchen installations per week and a strong relationship with William Wilson, doing full house refits and upgrading full heating systems.
However, the 2008 financial crisis put a strain on the industry as a whole which saw a decline throughout the marketplace, which was detrimental to MPH.
Going forward MPH teamed up with a UK wide sales and installation company Entu, As leaders in other markets in the industry Entu were looking to start a heating divsion installing boilers. With Ewans vast experience, He was tasked with helping Entu develop their boiler department, eventually growing the business to install 1800 boilers a year across Scotland.
In 2017, Entu unfortunately pulled out of the industry, but Ewan saw this as an opportunity to take the MPH brand to new heights. He opened a new office in Kirkcaldy and acquired a consumer credit licence, allowing MPH to offer financing options to customers. Ewan’s family and friends joined him in building up the office team, honing the sales side of the business and generating appointments.
At MPH, Ewan’s mission is to provide a comprehensive solution to customers, ensuring a seamless and positive experience from sale through to Install to after-sales support.
The heart of MPH lies in its family roots.
Ewan’s brother Paul manages all plumbing and heating, his brother-in-law Tommy manages kitchens, Scott (a 15-year veteran of the company) oversees the service department, and even Ewan’s mother Marion calls enquires.
Ewan’s wife Claire handles administration, son Ewan Jr. focuses on sales and marketing with Jnr’s girlfriend handling finance and accounts, and cousin Laura runs the bathroom and kitchen division.
His childhood best friend Ryan who designs and sells kitchens and long time boiler installer Gregor bringing his expertise he had gained at British gas, to John our oil expert.
With multiple generations of the McLean family and their close friends involved in the business, MPH is truly a family affair.
MPH also places a strong emphasis on cultivating its own talent, with apprenticeships for Ewan’s twin sons Connor and Leon (plumbing and heating), Ryan’s son Haig (joinery), and Ewan’s cousin Joe (finishing his 4th year plumbing apprenticeship), with family friend Krissy mastering his joinery skills to Jamie doing his plumbing and heating who is the grandson of Davy who has been with the company for over 10 years.
